Still waiting for the Tesla Model Y? Not sure about the MG ZS EV? The BYD Atto3 is well worth a look.

BYD has beaten both MG and Tesla at their own games by bringing a small cheap electric SUV to market in Australia. This super smart electric SUV has Mercedes legendary build quality and driving dynamics which put ICE equivalent vehicles to shame.

BYD Atto 3 Specifications:

The Atto 3  seats 5 comfortably has a curb weight of 1615kg and a dimensions of width 4455 and height 1615. The electric motor mounted  to the front wheels puts out 150kW and 310Nm of torque making it a fast to drive and well as fast to charge from its 11kW.

How to charge the BYD Atto 3 at a public Type 2 Mennekes EV charger

The Type 2 to Type 2 cable will charge your BYD Atto 3 up to 7Kw / add 50km for every hour of charge.

An essential cable for every Mennekes/Type 2 vehicle to enable safe and secure charging from public ‘Universal’ untethered charge points. There is a trend for public charge points to be universal; this means the point has no in-built cable.

The result is reduced maintenance and damage, as well as reduced liability for the owner of the station. If there is no permanently cable attached to the charger then there is less risk of it being driven over or generally being abused. Think air hose in a servo.  They are otherwise known as BYO cable chargers.

Which electric charge port does the BYD Atto 3 use?

The Atto 3 is equipped with a Type 2 CCS charge port. The Type 2 Mennekes connector is what’s typically used at home and at destination chargers. The combination port allows for fast DC charging as well as the standard AC charging.

We are currently recommending the Myenergi Zappi as the best domestic wall charger to go with the Atto 3.

How long does it take to charge the BYD Atto 3?

The maximum AC charge rate is 32amp or 7kW or 50km of range per hour connected. Time to fully recharge at the typical 32amp single phase or 7kw is around 9 hours.. This is only possible to charge this fast with a wall charging station or wallbox such as the myenergi Zappi. If you use a granny slow portable electric car charger (or EVSE) then the time to charge will be take close to 32 hours!

If you have solar panels at home or at the office, then UK brand Myenergi Zappi is the perfect EVSE charger. It's solar-aware technology links into your solar system to ensure you're never pulling from the electricity grid to charge your BYD Atto 3 - adjusting the charge depending on the amount of power you're pulling in the house so you always get clean, self-generated power behind your driving!

How to charge the BYD Atto 3 a public J1772 Type 1 electric car charger

A Type 1 public charging unit and cable will charge your BYD Atto 3 at up to 7kw / give you 50 kms per hour of charge.

For a long time, J1772 / Type 1 electric car chargers have been the norm for Australia and New Zealand. The issue for new car owners is there are many charging stations which use the J1772 Type 1 standard which you cannot natively take advantage of.

The answer is this incredibly useful J1772 to Tesla (Mennekes) adapter cable.

This allows you to connect to J1772 Type 1 charging station; simply insert the J1772 plug to charge at up to 7.6kw or 40-50 kms of range per hour. Have a look at Plugshare map pic as an example of just how many J1772 charging stations available in your area!
