Commercial EV charging case studies from our clients

Westfield Woden Shopping Centre

EV owners have the philosophy of “charge anywhere and everywhere” and will, therefore, favour those locations where they can top up their EV vehicle. Installing publicly accessible chargers don’t only attract more consumers to your business; they act as a competitive differentiator and increase brand loyalty.

In particular the presence of EV charging stations in shopping centre car park brings an added cache of value and customer service experience. It becomes a key draw card to the location, especially where adjacent locations do not offer electric vehicle charging.

Shortly after the installation of two Cylon chargers at Westfield Woden Shopping Centre, the centre's Facilities Manager (Frank Marolda) observed that the charging stations were often occupied. Even without any publicity and the allocated parking spaces not being in prominent locations, the stations were still 'discovered' by EV owners. Word spread amongst electric vehicle drivers via social media, word of mouth and the location was even posted on the popular EV app, Plugshare.

The stations are clearly, well frequented and popular with all EV users during their shopping experience. In a recent survey, EV owners revealed that they would prioritise a location with EV charging to one without. Consumers of Westfield Woden now see the location as a convenient charging stop thus have become loyal to the brand.

Key considerations with regards to EV charger installations in commercial / car parks are:

  1. Must be robust, reliable, attractive and easy to use.

  2. The chargers must be setup to be 'universal' so all EV owners (not just Tesla!) may use them.

  3. Clear signage (vertical signs and parking stencils) enables the chargers to be easily found.

  4. Conversely, clear signage prevents the charging spots being inadvertently occupied by non-EV drivers.

  5. Ideally, each charger should service multiple parking spaces i.e. two chargers service four spots.

  6. They create a point of difference - it's clear customers are making special trips to the centre to charge, which would not occur if the chargers weren’t available.

Of course, as with anything there are costs associated with the charger hardware and installation, this will need to be considered along with the overall investment.

Installing a publicly accessible charger is a smart option for shopping centres. They act as a point of difference, attracting more consumers to the business, which in return creates brand loyalty. The consumer “linger factor” forms as they extend the charging time, which means more time spent in the shopping centre and also results in an increase in dollars spent per EV driver. The environmental factor also plays a huge part, by sending a message to consumers about the values that the organisation has, being eco-friendly and forward thinking.

Koo Wee Rup installation

In the past few years we’ve seen some big budget investments in DC fast charging infrastructure (e.g. Queensland Electric Highway), as well as the introduction of high-powered 350kw DC fast chargers.

While this is very bold and impressive, sometimes a more measured, modest and cost effective approach is all that’s required to enable EV owners to make a trip.

For many years, the Bass Coast and in particular, Phillip Island, were just out of reach for electric vehicles like the Nissan LEAF and the BMW i3 to journey to. In 2018, we partnered with a local business to deploy a publicly accessible and free to use electric vehicle charging point (Cylon 32 wall charger), right in the centre of a small town called Koo Wee Rup.

Koo Wee Rup has a growing population of over 3,500 (census 2016). Over the years, the local supermarket and surrounding stores have had modern facelifts to contrast with the older buildings that tell the history of the town.

This EV charging point project started when Malcolm Brown, an Environmental Consultant in Koo Wee Rup, gave us a call to further understand about how electric vehicle charging points work. Malcolm’s idea was to install an EV charger to attract EV owners who use the Koo Wee Rup Bypass to visit places like local wineries, or en route to Phillip Island and the Bass Coast.

While this isn't a fast charger, it is now one of the most popular destination chargers in Victoria and has created a new income stream for the shops and businesses in Koo Wee Rup. For EV owners travelling to Phillip Island, Wonthaggi and the rest of Bass Coast Shire, the EV charger at Koo Wee Rup is a mandatory stop off. The charger enables travellers to top up their battery and top up themselves with something from the bakery or local shops.

Since installing the charger, it is already proving to be popular. With a listing on PlugShare and some publicity on social media, Malcolm was very quickly contacted by EV users who were keen to stop by, so that they could effectively complete their journeys. One user stopped off at one of the local restaurants before continuing her journey, which she wouldn’t have otherwise done if the charger wasn’t installed. In short, it's become a prime stop off point for those travelling to or from Melbourne to Bass Cost Shire!

Sometimes councils are unwilling or unable to deploy publicly available charging infrastructure, so we regularly partner with local businesses and the community to make charging facilities more widespread and accessible. We do this because we believe electric vehicles are the future, and better for the environment, delivering an eco-friendly and forward thinking message to consumers.

Of course, as with anything there are costs associated with the charger hardware and installation, so make sure you ask about how EVolution may help subsidise this for you.
