What are the best cables and adaptors for your Tesla Model 3?
Are you about to take delivery of your Tesla Model 3? Great!
As you’re probably aware, your Tesla HPWC will arrive with your Model 3. But, in order to have a positive EV experience, it’s a good idea to have your at-home charging options sorted before you actually have a shiny new 3 on your driveway. That’s why we’ve put together an easy-to-follow EV charging guide.
But what about charging while out and about? There’s lots of information and misinformation on the web with regards to cables and adaptors.
So, we thought we’d create this short and sweet guide for not just the Tesla Model 3 but any Type 2 or Mennekes-equipped vehicle in Australia and New Zealand. For example, this advice is just as relevant for the Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Ioniq and Renault Zoe as the Tesla Model S or Model X.
For flexible and efficient charging while you’re on the road, there are two cables we recommend you invest in.
Type 2 to Type 2
This cable will charge your Tesla Model 3 up to 22Kw / add 120 km for every hour of charge
An essential cable for every Mennekes/Type 2 vehicle to enable safe and secure charging from public ‘Universal’ charge points.
There is a trend for public charge points to be universal; this means the point has no in-built cable. The result is reduced maintenance and damage, as well as reduced liability for the owner of the station.
If there is no permanently cable attached to the charger then there is less risk of it being driven over or generally being abused. Think air hose in a servo. They are otherwise known as BYO cable chargers.
Type 1 to Type 2 cable
This cable will charge your Tesla Model 3 up to 7kw / give you 40 kms per hour of charge.
For a long time, J1772 / Type 1 connectors have been the norm for domestic use. The issue for new car owners is there are many charging stations which use the J1772 standard which you cannot natively take advantage of.
The answer is this incredibly useful J1772 to Tesla (Mennekes) adapter cable. This allows you to connect to J1772 charging station; simply insert the J1772 plug to charge at up to 7.6kw or 30-40 kms of range per hour. Have a look at Plugshare map pic as an example of just how many J1772 charging stations available in your area!
Why purchase extra cables and adaptors for your Tesla Model 3?
We’re glad you asked! We know from our own EV driving and from hearing from our customers that it’s important to have a positive experience when you first get an electric vehicle. We also know that range anxiety is one of the biggest obstacles to EV uptake in Australia.
Simply investing in these two products means you’ll be able to charge up a range of public places. Pretty much every shopping centre, open-air car parks, cafes and wineries…you get out and enjoy your new Tesla without having to worry about range. How easy is that?
We've put together a Tesla Model 3 charging bundle which will make it easy for you to plug and play. Or, if you’d like to know more, please get in touch and one of our team will get back to you within one business day.
