When to charge your EV?

The simple answer is always.

So there's a rule of thought that Fast DC Charging is the route to mass EV adoption in any country. The truth is that DC charging is not available everywhere and IS difficult for some organisations (councils, small businesses etc) to install due to the need to provision 3 phase power. The DC charging stations are not cheap either and represent a massive investment.. for very little quantifiable payback.

The other consideration has to be around how and when we charge our vehicles. With normal Internal Combustion Engined (ICE) cars we're used to filling up when the tank's empty but with EVs there's a different proposition. Electricity is all around us and in many developed countries charging stations are all around us too. So it makes sense to take advantage of when and where we can.. so top up at home, at the work car park, at the shopping centre and at friends homes. Charge everywhere!

Now of course this doesn't apply to all trips and certainly not to longer journeys but in those cases you'll either have a higher capacity EV (Tesla or Bolt) and/or an ICE car for those journeys. But while the charging infrastructure is still maturing we should most definitely change our view on refuelling to small and often rather than large and infrequent..and make the best of the infrastructure we have available to us.
