How to charge your Tesla Model S or Model X

The iconic Tesla Model S and Model X really need no introduction to anyone interested in electric vehicles.

This is the brand that has influenced so many individuals and traditional car manufacturers to take electric vehicles seriously...not only as the solution for sustainable transport, but also for their absolute sheer driving pleasure.

With some models capable of 0-100kmh in under 3 seconds and range of 500+km this really is the hero of electric cars!

We've put the two models on one page here (rather than splitting them out) because, while they are very different vehicles, optimal charging methods are the same.

So, let's have a look at what you get with your S or X, how Tesla do charging and how we can help you create a more efficient, better looking and smarter charging experience.

Charging information for your Tesla Model S or X

When your Tesla arrives, it should come with a High Power Wall Connector (HPWC) and a portable universal mobile connector (UMC).

These two bits of kit help you charge up at home (HPWC) and while out and about (the UMC) or wherever you can access a standard 10amp power point.

As the Tesla HPWS is a commercial grade charger, it's capable of up to 24amp, 3 phase long as your home or apartment is capable of supplying it. It's important to note that many domestic properties can't supply anywhere near the maximum the HPWC can handle, so it needs to be set up correctly. Therefore, while you might have a favourite electrician, one with EV experience is probably a better bet.

It seems a little back-to-front, but as you don't receive your charging equipment prior to the EV itself, it's worth getting your electrician organised well in advance of EV delivery day.

If you would like a fast quote to install your HPWC, anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, just give us a call or complete the installation form for a no-obligation costing that doesn't require a site visit.

Plug standard for the Tesla S and X: Type 2 - IEC 62196

The maximum AC charge rate is 24 A 3-Phase (HPWC)

Time to fully recharge (at the typical 16 A 3-Phase) is 6.5 hours (Model S 60) to 9.5 hours (Model S P100D)

Why upgrade your Tesla-supplied HPWC or UMC?

Put simply, the HPWC and UMC have their limitations.

For example, the HPWC has no connectivity, no smart phone app, charge range control and isn't solar aware.

And, if you live in an apartment or multi-dwelling situation, the HPWC has no load management and cannot be monetised, meaning you can't prove to your body corporate how much power you're using to charge your Tesla and what that will be costing.

The EV charging alternatives we're recommending below are solar-aware and can be managed and monitored. They also won't break the bank!

Eco-smart, intelligent charging for your Tesla Model S or X

As mentioned above, these models arrive with their chargers in the vehicle, which poses a slight inconvenience to new EV drivers wanting to get their Tesla out on the road!

We know that having a great EV experience means being able to easily and quickly access fast and efficient EV charging.

We also speak to EV drivers every day who also have access to renewable power but want to better use their self-generated electrons to primarily charge their EV or PHEV (rather than feeding it back to the grid!)

While we have a range of great products for a range of EV charging applications, we highly recommend the Myenergi Zappi and Charge Amps HALO for home or office charging.

The Zappi - as well as being a great looking unit - takes your self-generated power and directs it to your EV or the appliances in your home that are demanding electricity. So, if you plug your Tesla X or S in, but then go inside and switch the kettle on, the Zappi will redirect power to the kettle, rather than pulling power from the grid to feed both. Smart and intelligent charging.

The Swedish designed Charge Amps HALO is a sleek and stylish wall unit with it's own smart software, a tethered cable and is hard-working, hard-wearing and made from recycling aluminium.

Both are an excellent choice for your Tesla X or S, with or without onsite renewable energy.

Charge your Tesla from J1772 / Type 1 & ChargePoint stations

While Tesla has done a stirling job in rolling out many Tesla chargers across Australia and New Zealand there are still many gaps in the network.

What many EV drivers don't realise is that are many more charging stations which use the J1772 standard which you cannot natively take advantage of.

You only have to take a look at the Plugshare app to see how many J1772 charging stations are available in your area.

That's why the J1772 to Tesla (Mennekes) adaptor cable is one of our best selling products; with this adaptor you can park up at any J1772 point and charge at up to 7.6kW or 30-40kms of range per hour of charging.
