What are the best cables & adaptors for your Type 1 EV like the Outlander PHEV & Nissan Leaf?

You’re the proud owner of a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Nissan LEAF, Nissan e-NV200 or Holden Volt? Great news!

There’s a simple ABC adage as a EV owner – Always Be Charging. When you’re at home, the charger that came with our vehicle is perfectly capable of providing a slow charge overnight.

But while you’re on the road, either commuting during the week or enjoying a drive over the weekend, charging your EV can be trickier. And while there’s a heap of information online, not all of it is accurate. That’s why we’ve put together this guide for any Type 1 or J1772 car such as the Outlander PHEV, Nissan LEAF, Holden Volt and certain BMW models such as the i3.

For each charging options in most situations, there are two cables we recommend you invest in.

Type 2 to Type 1

universal cable

Up to 22Kw / 120 km per hour of charge

An essential cable for every Type 1 / J1772 vehicle to enable safe and secure charging from public ‘Universal’ charge points.

There is a trend for public charge points to be universal, that is offer no cable at all. The reasons for this trend is reduced maintenance and damage, reduced liability by the venue. If there is no permanently cable attached to the charger then there is less risk of it being driven over or generally being abused. Think air hose in a servo.  They are otherwise known as BYO Cable Chargers.

Type 2 to Type 1

tethered cable

Up to 7kw / 40 kms per hour of charge

With Type 2 tethered connections now the norm for many public charging stations, EVs with Type 1 / J1772 are unable to take advantage of the growing number being deployed.

With this product, you simply connect one end of the cable to the Mennekes connection of the charger and the other to your car to charge at up to 32 amps or 30-40kms per hour.

Why purchase extra cables and adaptors for your Outlander PHEV, Nissan LEAF or other Type 1 EV?

The answer is straight-forward. We know that it’s important to have a positive experience when you first get an EV, otherwise the shine quickly fades. We also know that range anxiety is one of the biggest challenges to EV uptake in Australia and New Zealand.

Simply investing in these two cables means you’ll be able to charge up a range of public places. Pretty much every shopping centre, open-air car parks, cafes and wineries…you get out and enjoy your BEV or PHEV without having to worry about range. Nice and simple!
